Kratom in Pennsylvania - Lawmakers’ latest concern

Image
Sep. 6—Among legislation Pennsylvania lawmakers will consider when they return to Harrisburg for voting sessions after an absence of more than two months is regulation of a plant-based substance that can produce opioid- and stimulant-like effects. Although kratom and kratom-based products are legal and accessible in many areas throughout the U.S., including Pennsylvania, the Food and Drug Administration and other federal agencies continue to review emerging evidence to inform kratom policy, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Kratom is derived from leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia and has become popular for various uses, including as a coffee-like stimulant and to fight pain and anxiety. Among the unapproved uses is for treatment of addiction; it's believed that many of those who buy kratom are using it as a natural alternative to the prescription drug suboxone, which treats symptoms of withdrawal from opioids such as pain pills and heroin. Boosting Kratom Exports - KSP lauds cooperation with American Kratom Association There needs to be joint research between the US and Indonesian educational institutions Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Presidential Staff Office (KSP) has lauded ongoing cooperation for the development of herbal plant kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), which is known for its pain-relieving properties, as an export commodity. The cooperation for kratom’s export development was initiated by the American-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce, the American Kratom Association (AKA), and the Anugerah Bumi Hijau Producers Cooperative (KOPRABUH). "Kratom can lift economic growth. Making kratom an export commodity is very possible to do because, under Ministerial Regulation No. 18 of 2021, kratom is not among the items that are prohibited from exports," chief of the Presidential Staff, Moeldoko, said while receiving US trade associations and high-ranking officials at Bina Graha Building, here on Monday. Kratom ,...

Should Ascension Parish ban kratom? Several commenters weigh in during meeting The introduction of an ordinance to regulate the sale and use of kratom drew several commenters, both for and against, to the Ascension Parish Council meeting held Aug. 4 at the courthouse in Donaldsonville. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, kratom can be taken as a pill, crushed and smoked, brewed as a tea, or chewed. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's website warns consumers not to use kratom, which grows naturally in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. "FDA is concerned that kratom, which affects the same opioid brain receptors as morphine, appears to have properties that expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse, and dependence," the site stated. An organization called the American Kratom Association, which advocates to protect kratom consumers, included information on the Ascension Parish meeting on its Louisiana page of its websi...

Is Kratom legal in Kentucky in 2022?

Image
Is Kratom legal in Kentucky in 2022? A plant commonly known as kratom, which can lead to stimulant or sedative effects, spurred discussion among legislators last week during a meeting of the Interim Joint Committee on Health, Welfare, and Family Services. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), kratom and kratom-based products are now legal and  obtainable in the United States , but international agencies are still gathering information about them. During the 2022 legislative session, Rep. Josh Calloway (R-Irvington) sponsored House Bill 569, which would have prohibited a kratom processor or kratom retailer from dispensing, selling or distributing any kratom extract or kratom product to anyone under 21 years of age. HB 569 did not pass this year, but Calloway told committee members that kratom use in Kentucky needs to be addressed due to safety concerns. “I’m not saying that it doesn’t have good uses for lots of things,” he said. “I’ve had thousands of peopl...

Louisiana Ascension Parish Scheduled Kratom hearing - Cancelled

Image
Louisiana Ascension Parish has cancelled the kratom hearing scheduled for today (Thursday 7/21/22.) This is a direct result of the advocacy efforts from the kratom protector community We will continue to monitor the situation and help educate officials. This is important for all Louisiana and American Kratom Protectors. Arguments against kratom being pushed in Ascension are similar to attacks we're seeing elsewhere, especially from rehab center owners. The American Kratom Association is working hard to show the real science and dispute what is often fear-mongering and completely false claims. At a recent Louisiana Ascension Parish Strategic Planning meeting, anti-kratom rehab groups shared why they felt kratom should be banned. There was a lot of misinformation shared about kratom, including the Sherif's Department stating "basically it is synthetic heroin." The Parish then called for a full hearing on kratom, originally scheduled for today, to help them...
