Join Webinar on Federal Kratom Consumer Protection Act

Image
Join Webinar on Federal Kratom Consumer Protection Act During the last week, the Federal Kratom Consumer Protection Act was filed in both Houses of Congress. While it will need to be refiled next session, this creates massive momentum for consumer protection, and it shows the bureaucratic opponents of kratom that our community is committed to ensuring science dictates kratom policy. We understand there are a lot of questions around the potential bill, so we didn't want to wait any longer before holding a webinar to provide more details, possible outcomes, and impacts of legislation. So we encourage you to make some time tomorrow, Tuesday December 27th at 9pm EST for a brief webinar on the newly filed Federal KCPA bill. Kratom in Pennsylvania - Lawmakers’ latest concern

Image
Sep. 6—Among legislation Pennsylvania lawmakers will consider when they return to Harrisburg for voting sessions after an absence of more than two months is regulation of a plant-based substance that can produce opioid- and stimulant-like effects. Although kratom and kratom-based products are legal and accessible in many areas throughout the U.S., including Pennsylvania, the Food and Drug Administration and other federal agencies continue to review emerging evidence to inform kratom policy, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Kratom is derived from leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia and has become popular for various uses, including as a coffee-like stimulant and to fight pain and anxiety. Among the unapproved uses is for treatment of addiction; it's believed that many of those who buy kratom are using it as a natural alternative to the prescription drug suboxone, which treats symptoms of withdrawal from opioids such as pain pills and heroin. Is Kratom legal in Kentucky in 2022?

Image
Is Kratom legal in Kentucky in 2022? A plant commonly known as kratom, which can lead to stimulant or sedative effects, spurred discussion among legislators last week during a meeting of the Interim Joint Committee on Health, Welfare, and Family Services. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), kratom and kratom-based products are now legal and  obtainable in the United States , but international agencies are still gathering information about them. During the 2022 legislative session, Rep. Josh Calloway (R-Irvington) sponsored House Bill 569, which would have prohibited a kratom processor or kratom retailer from dispensing, selling or distributing any kratom extract or kratom product to anyone under 21 years of age. HB 569 did not pass this year, but Calloway told committee members that kratom use in Kentucky needs to be addressed due to safety concerns. “I’m not saying that it doesn’t have good uses for lots of things,” he said. “I’ve had thousands of peopl...

Louisiana Ascension Parish Scheduled Kratom hearing - Cancelled

Image
Louisiana Ascension Parish has cancelled the kratom hearing scheduled for today (Thursday 7/21/22.) This is a direct result of the advocacy efforts from the kratom protector community We will continue to monitor the situation and help educate officials. This is important for all Louisiana and American Kratom Protectors. Arguments against kratom being pushed in Ascension are similar to attacks we're seeing elsewhere, especially from rehab center owners. The American Kratom Association is working hard to show the real science and dispute what is often fear-mongering and completely false claims. At a recent Louisiana Ascension Parish Strategic Planning meeting, anti-kratom rehab groups shared why they felt kratom should be banned. There was a lot of misinformation shared about kratom, including the Sherif's Department stating "basically it is synthetic heroin." The Parish then called for a full hearing on kratom, originally scheduled for today, to help them...

FDA Head Wants New Regulations for Kratom and CBD

Image
FDA Head Wants New Regulations for Kratom and CBD The head of the Food and Drug Administration says his agency will need new authority from Congress to regulate both kratom and cannabidiol (CBD), two natural substances used by millions of Americans to self-treat their pain and other medical conditions. FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf testified on Thursday before a House Appropriations subcommittee, where he was asked why the agency was slow in developing new regulations for CBD and why it remained opposed to the use of kratom. Califf said new regulatory pathways were needed for both substances because they fall between the cracks of existing law that gives the FDA broad authority to regulate food and drugs. “I don’t think the current authority we have, on the food side and the drug side, necessarily gives us what we need to have to get the right pathway to move us forward. We’re going to have to come up with something new. I’m very committed to doing that,” said Califf. Calif...

Law Protects Kratom Users - Oregon Kratom Consumer Protection Act

Image
Law Protects Kratom Users Oregon Kratom Consumer Protection Act Gov. Kate Brown recently signed into law the Oregon Kratom Consumer Protection Act , which took effect this month. This is vital legislation for Oregon and shapes the path for federal regulations of kratom, a popular herbal remedy, to keep all consumers safe. As a member of Gov. Brown’s Opioid Task Force, I have learned how damaging opioids can be to individuals and their families. After years of scientific research showing that kratom is a significantly safer product than opioids and other drugs, many of us are relieved that Governor Brown has decided to take this step to protect Oregonians who rely on kratom. This passage marks a change in understanding why protecting and regulating kratom is so important. People also read: What is Kratom, And Why Do Lawmakers Want To Regulate It? One of my closest friends uses kratom to relieve pain after she found opioids affected her ability to be a mother. Thousands of Or...

Colorado Governor Polis Signs Bill Regulating Kratom Colorado is the eighth state to pass kratom regulation and the third just this year, along with Missouri and Oregon. Ensuring kratom products are pure and unadulterated is critically important to protecting consumers across the state, and will get us one step closer to federal kratom regulation. (May 31, 2022) – Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed into law Senate Bill 22-120, the Regulation of Kratom Processors, modeled after Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) legislation passed in several other states, which will regulate the production, distribution and sale of kratom products in the state.  #consumerprotection #law #kratomprotectors #americankratomassociation #kcpa #kratomregulation #colorado #kratomincolorado #kratomnews R...
